Stormvermin and High Elf Update #1

I spent some evenings this week on the Stormvermin, and also getting started on some High Elf Spearmen. As the High Elves will be a birthday present for one of my kids (who, before you ask, doesn't really use the internet much so hopefully won't see this!) I am only working on them late at night.

Some update pics below.

Skaven Stormvermin.
Champion. He is the only one with "Blued" armour.
Rank and file.

I managed to get some basic work on the bases done, and also a couple of basecoats. My main Skaven army colour is Ice Blue, so I have used a slighly darker Ice Blue/ Mordian Blue blend to start off with, and will then layer-on from there after some washes.
Being Stormvermin, there is lots of armour (at least by Skaven standards) so plenty of Boltgun Metal!
I followed through on my idea of only having the unit champion with coloured armour. I figure only he would have enough warptokens to do that (or perhaps the armour is taken from the previous user upon death). The others have some of their cloth done in the army colour.
Next up: Basecoat detailing, washes and highlights.

High Elf Spearmen.

Both of these models have received base-colours but no washes or highlights/ drybrushing.

These guys are taking much, much, longer than I thought they would (which makes me worry slightly about how long cavalry might take!) Apparently High Elves wear white when going into battle, so I worked-up the sleeves from Codex Grey and Fortress Grey through to Skull White - and that takes quite some time.

As purple is my kid's favorite colour, I am experimenting with Liche Purple and Warlock Purple. I hope that some Warlock Purple highlights will lighten the Liche Purple nicely.

My big question is the shields. I like the green gem (came out nicely) but haven't mastered purple yet. The burning question - which shield style is better, Purple or White?  I think white would be more common, and I quite like the purple one, but would it be too Druchii?
How about white for cannon-fodder, and purple for Champions?

All thoughts appreciated.

Cheers,

  1. Hey Squeek,

My husband was looking over my shoulder and said that the purple is definitely too Dark Elfy (and I know he's anti the overly white look for High Elves)... He suggested maybe a green on the main part of the shield? Though that might even be too Wood Elfy... I dunno - you just can't win!

    Cheers,
    Fern

    1. Hmmm, I think he might be right...but they both look quite striking. Instead of using a Liche Purple I might try a full Warlock purple shield, which would be brighter.
As you say - CAN'T WIN!
      ;-)
      Thanks for the help though.

  2. I feel your white pain, it takes me about 6 coats to get it looking OK - and then I cheat by using the Vallejo Pale Grey wash for shading.

As for the purple, I think the Nagarythe High Elves use it, so I wouldn't have an issue with it.

I also have to agree that the green gem stone looks excellent.

    1. Yeah, white IS a pain. I thought of doing a white undercoat and just doing one or two extra layers of skull white on top to smooth it out, followed by painting a very weak grey wash into folds etc...
I will look into the Nagarythe. I hadn't thought that there might be an actual "official" purple option!

  3. I suggest a lighter purple. Might check heraldry of high elves?

And I agree with others that the gems do look nice.

    As example from GW site:

    1. ooooo - that very light purple might be exactly what I am looking for.
:-) Is that a Warlock Purple? (I think there are currently three purples. Liche, Warlock and Hormagaunt...
Thanks for the tip! (and the compliment on the gems too)

    2. AND, on the page before the link you listed, is a very nice purple shield. "Temroth Featherspite" is someone who might fit very nicely.

    3. Not too sure about the color as I never bought purple =P
but if you do prime your elves in white, i think warlock purple might be fine?

might be better if you try both of the color to compare. If you do washes, it will darken the color anyways

    4. I am just finishing up some washed on my Stormvermin but may have a few minutes to do a shield and see how it turns out! It is after midnight here and tomorrow is a working day. :-(
      Good point about the washes!

  4. Nothing wrong with Purple High Elves - repainted all of mine that way a while ago.

However, of the two I like the White Shield the most. The purple colour seems to hide the emblem too much, whereas with the white it stands out more as it should.

    1. About the white shield...you and my wife both!
Last night I actually did another test shield all in Warlock Purple and I thought it was really striking - and probably the best of them. I will post a couple of images when I can for comparison.
Thanks for this feedback - it all helps. I have definitely moved away from liche purple as a result of peoples feedback clarifying my thoughts!

  5. Have you tried the Foundation light grey(I think it's a Adeptus battle grey?) as a base for white? That's what I use and I get a good white with 1 coat of the foundation and 1 coat of P3 White.
