Plagueclaw Catapult update...

*Squeek*

Just time for a quick update and some pics today...

After finishing my Gutter Runners/ Night Runners, I was torn between starting to paint up x20 Stormvermin and doing another warmachine. In the end I decided to do a warmachine. Although I like the SV models, I don't have enough of them to be really effective at the moment and I wanted a break from doing units of rats and do something that might be (relatively) quick.

So, the other day I started out with the new Warplightning Cannon/ Plague Claw Catapult box. Inside are the parts to make one or the other, but it occurred to me that it must be pretty easy to make it "dual use", as I had done with my Screaming Bell/ Plague Furnace conversion.I got some comments that I could have used a much simpler approach for that conversion, so this time I tried to make things simpler, and I think I have found a way to do it.

I'll post a full entry once everything is painted-up, but I can give you the idea here.

Firstly, you'll need to clip away the wires on the front of the Warplightning cannon. Then, attach the Plague Claw Catapult basket to the back of the WLC arm.

DO NOT GLUE THE FLOORBOARDS INTO PLACE ON THE FRAME YET.
Put the whole assembly in the frame first (there is a "tall" frame configuration and a "low" frame configuration - use the "low" one.)
Make sure you don't glue the axle in place.

File away a small curve in the floorboards of the frame, so that the whole unit can rotate freely.

Finally, attach the floorboards at the "front" of the model. If you do this and you DON'T GLUE THE CREW IN PLACE (I put them separately on bases) you should be able to rotate the whole arm so it is either pointing "Forward" (towards the spikey front of the unit) as a Warplightning cannon (with the PGC basket facing downwards) OR "Backwards", (with the PGC basket facing upwards.) as in the photos below.
Warplightning cannon mode...
Plagueclaw Catapult mode...
Although at first I didn't think it looked right, I have actually come to like it more and more. After all, I'm sure that our Warlock Engineers could find a way to strengthen the WLC so it wouldn't shake itself to bits every time the PGC fired right?!

...Clan Skryre is CUNNING yes-YES?

The Gutter Runners Join the Ranks...

*Squeek*

Just a quick post today to follow-up on the Night Runner/ Gutter Runner painting guide I posted the other day...

...pics have now been added to my Warlord Clan Page.

So, what's next?

  1. My first Plagueclaw Catapult? (At least one of my likely opponents is a High-Elf player...)
  2. A second Warplightning Cannon?
  3. A small unit of Storm Vermin? (x20)
In a way I want to avoid the StormVermin until I can afford to get another 20 or so. I'm not sure just having my current 20 on the field will be much use...

...what do you other Warlords think?

Cheers,

Skaven Tactica and Resources at Games Workshop..

*Squeek*

If you are a new Skaven Warlord (like me) you will often find useful articles lurking around the Games Workshop website. Even if you only get a tip or two or an idea for how you want to paint your next Clanrat unit or pointers for your next list these are still a useful read (IMHO).

This month (Feb 2011) has seen the Great Horned Rat favor his children (us) with new models AND several articles on the GW site that will be of interest. Here is a quick round-up of some of the more interesting articles from the last month or two. (Let me know if I have missed any...) Below these I include a couple of older articles that may also be of interest.

TACTICS:
Skaven: Warmachine Tactica
(Includes Warp Lighting Cannon, Plague Claw Catapult and Doomwheel.)
Hell Pit Abomination feature
(a couple of interesting paint schemes.)
Skaven: The Ravenous Hordes - Sample Armies
Skaven: Magic Tactica

PAINTING:

Skaven: Painting
(3-step painting guides and specific painting guides for a couple of interesting Clans)

Skaven Hell Pit Abomination Released!

*Squeek!*

Yesses, the Skaven Second Wave of new models goes on sales today, Saturday 15th of Jan, 2011! If you haven't already seen them, I put up some photos when the models were announced, as well as a poll (Thanks to all who voted...) Since I haven't done so officially already, here are the results:

  1. Hell Pit Abomination: 27%
  2. Ikit Claw: 25%
  3. Warp Lightning Cannon/ Plagueclaw Catapult: 14%
  4. Doom-Flayer Weapon Team and Warp-Grinder Weapon Team (Tie): 11%
  5. Tretch Craventail: 9%
So there you have it, the HPA wins by a (twitching) nose!

...and as luck would have it, I have one! Please see below for an unboxing and some sprue photos...

Inside the box are a couple of large sprues, and extensive instruction leaflet ("Remember to always cut away from your fingers") and a large base.

Having taken a few photos, I have a couple of initial reactions.

Firstly, from the instructions and box shots (as well as the photos at Games Workshop) you can see that there a number of options for the jaw, arms and heads. There appear to be eight different heads, of which it looks as though four are freely interchangeable. At first glance, I would agree with some comments on the web that the model doesn't seem to lend itself to modification very much outside of the options I mentioned above. Now, that might seem crazy, because of course having a choice of body parts at all is great, but the potential problem may be the overall body and limb positions don't leave a lot of options to make easy changes due to the moulding. The cool thing about any miniatures painting and assembly is making adjustments to each model. With small models that is pretty easy to do. In this case, I am sure that we will see some very cool conversions soon, but I think that these will probably be done by experienced modelers (i.e. Not me...) at least if significant changes are to be made.  If these are even half-way as good as some of the amazing HPA models that were made before this was released then we are in for a real treat. I'm really looking forward to making this model, but as a beginner, I'm pretty nervous about how well I'll be able to paint it due to those vast areas of skin and flesh.
(I can see myself trying to remove the terrain piece from the front hand and replacing it with some hapless enemy model. That way it looks as though the HPA has someone in it's claws and is about to burst their skull like a grape - hahahaha!)

Secondly, when I saw the pre-release photos from Games Workshop I have to admit that I couldn't see the connection with the Blindwyrm, the dreaded creature that a Hell Pit abomination is supposed to be in part created from. I guess that I was expecting something more..."wormy"?

That is still the case.

While the model does have worm-like qualities these seem to be given mainly by the paint-job used. A very pale colour or white creates the image of something that has lived out of the light, just like a worm in fact. What detracts from this however in this case is the number of limbs and the rat ogre parts - and I guess the size of the limbs. I know the HPA is made by combining rat ogre parts (and others) with the blindwyrm but I guess it is different to my expectations. Having said that, this is going to be a really great addition to my army - but I still want the awesome Scar-Skath model from Maelstrom too (use him as a Vermin Lord...)

Returning to the poll for a minute I was really, REALLY surprised and disappointed to see that so few people liked the Tretch Craventail model. I think it is a fantastic sculpt because it is really different from most other models. The way Tretch is perched on the terrain looks really natural and fits in with his backstory really well too. As I have said before this allows Tretch to have his tail extended - something we don't usually see in other Skaven models (so they can be more easily ranked up probably.) With Tretch on the terrain piece, it almost looks as though it is a "Unit Filler" piece. Points also from me for adding the little rat at the bottom. It is the little details that add a touch of class to a model IMHO. LONG LIVE TRETCH!

...definitely going to pick one of those up!

Anyone got any of the other new release models yet? What are they like?

*Squeek*

Here we are, January 2011, with lots of Skaven left to paint! I thought I would take a few moments to look at how far I have come along with this army since April 24th 2010, the date my first box of Skaven arrived, including a Skaven Battalion.

So where are we now?

The boxes arrive. April 24th 2010. Little did I know...

NEW Hell Pit Abomination/ Plague Claw Catapult/ Ikit Claw/ Doom Flayer/ Skaven Battle Magic Available for Pre-Order!

*Squeek*

Crikey, all those rumors and other photos from around the web were right...the new official Skaven models from GW are on their way. From early in the New Year, Skaven players will be able to purchase the following models to add to their all-conquering armies...
...the Hell Pit Abomination.
...a Plagueclaw Catapult/ Warp Lighting Cannon kit.
...a Skaven Doom-Flayer Weapons Team kit.
...a new Ikit Claw model.
...a Warhammer Battle Magic: Skaven pack.

Please note, it is made clear that two of these items, the Hell Pit Abomination and Warhammer Battle Magic Pack, are listed as "While Stocks Last". Therefore, once stock is sold out they will "no longer be available". (Of course, it isn't made clear how many kits there are...)

See below for some photos and further information on each model. At the end of this entry you will find a full list of links.

- etc.

Plagueclaw Catapult/ Warp Lightning Cannon
Now this is interesting - the Plagueclaw Catapult can ALSO be a Warplighting Cannon!

I've got to say that I really like the look of this model!
Part of it is the possibilities that could arise from having two warmachines in one 51-part kit, and part of it is just the sheer appeal of the "pile of toxic sludge" included (that disgusting blob of plague-infested stuff in the picture above!). As there is already an incarnation of the Warp Lighting Cannon available, I am less excited about this new version -  it kind of looks a bit spindly and weak to me. (Having said that though, once people have played around with the kit a bit there may be ingenious ways of making both at the same time from one box...)

I note that this model isn't listed at the time of writing as a "While Stocks Last Item" (unlike the Hell Pit Abomination above) so hopefully this will be around for a while. According to the website, this item will available from the 15th January.

Ikit Claw
Finally, we have a new, metal model for Ikit Claw - the infamous Warlock Engineer...

Love the look of this one! Like the other models above, the feared Clan Skryre master engineer will be available from the 15th of January.

Skaven Doom-Flayer Weapon Team
For sheer ingenuity, any rat-lovin', surface-dweller-slicing, skaplayer has to love the Doom-Flayer! This is apparently a 5 part metal kit. Note that as of the time of writing no release date is given for this model. ("This item is not available now, but you can pre-order it.")

Warhammer Battle Magic: Skaven
I have to be honest with you, I don't really see the point of these Battle Magic sets.

Although GW claims that these are "...just what a Grey Seer needs to keep track of his spells in battle" I think that most Grey Seers would lose these cards or end up being slowed down by having to shuffle through them to find their magic. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that most players would take their Skaven army book to a battle anyway and that has all the spells already ( AND neatly laid out on a double page spread no less...)
Yeah, yeah, I know...call me "Squeek the Cynical" if you wish. (and "Squeek the Two-Faced" as well, because I'll probably order a pack as they are only 3.50 of your man-thing British Pounds...)

For Skaven players it's going to be a Happy (if very expensive!) New Year...
For our enemies - a year of TERROR!

Painting a Skaven Warp Lightning Cannon!

*Neek, Neek*
Yes, yes, the Warp Lightning Cannon is much feared by our enemies!

I haven't been able to work on any painting this weekend, so instead thought I would put up another item that I did while I was waiting for the bulk of my army to arrive a couple of weeks ago. This time, a Warp Lighting Cannon.
As I haven't yet used the army I am working on, I haven't used this weird and wonderful weapon of war, but from what I hear (and the army book) it is a classic Skaven item: potentially devastating - often to the Skaven crew themselves!
Here is the finished item (Click image to enlarge and view on Picasa).
(Below the pics I will add some info on what Games Workshop paints I used.)
