Hello my fellow Warlords. This entry in the Chattering Horde is for your beady eyes only - NOT for the man things, as in this entry we will look at a relatively easy way to keep your Screaming Bell kit as "Dual Use".
As you will know, the kit contains parts for both models, but usually, people use it as one or the other. Of course, using parts located on the scavenge pile of the inter-tunnels, you could always scrounge spare parts, but why do that? Especially when even without Warlock Engineer skills or Clan Skryre ingenuity you can achieve the same end? Yes, yes, you see it now!
So how do we achieve this? Arm yourself with a craft-knive, some plastic glue and a bit of patience, and read on!
WARNING: Before anything else, just remember that you are NOT going to glue the Bell or the Plague censer axle between the two stone columns on the platform.
BELL RINGER CONVERSION:
1. Locate the Rat-ogre bell puller.
2. Carefully cut away part of the circle at the end of his chain, in a direction towards the bell puller. This cut should allow you to clip the part onto the end (axle) of the bell.
3. OPTIONAL: As you aren't going to glue the bell-ringer's chain to the axle of the Screaming Bell (you will just gently clip it on and unclip it) you may find that you may need to add a bit of weight to the bottom of the bell-ringer's platform. This is because otherwise the weight of the bell can pull the platform up in the air. I used a couple of spare bits from some Tau XV Broadside models, but I'm guessing that a couple of coins in the right place would do the trick. Image below:
4. Clip the chain onto the axle of the bell to use!
To convert the Plague Censer, there are two steps. The first is to convert the axle on the plague censer, the second is to convert the chain pulled by the Plague monk team that mans the equipment. See below some photos and more information.
PLAGUE CENSER AXLE CONVERSION:
1. You are going to make an extension of the Plague censer axle. Take 4 parts of sprue.
2. You are going to cut two equal lengths and glue these to the Plague censer axle. They will need to be a few centimeters long and at one end be joined so that the Plague Censer swinging team can clip their chain to it (see below). You will see in the picture below that I have scored the sprue parts and added some chips. Once painted this will help these parts look more like lengths of wood.
PLAGUE MONK TEAM CONVERSION:
There are two parts to this. The first is to work on the chain. The second is to make a new platform for the Plague Monks (because the platform supplied with the kit is being used by the Rat Ogre bell ringer!)
1. As with the Rat Ogre conversion (above) we need to make sure we can easily clip the chain of the plague monk team on and off the new axle that we added above.
2. Carefully cut open the circle at the end of the chain that the Plague Monk crew are holding. The picture below will give you an idea of the size and angle of the cuts to make.
3. Using the platform that is supplied with the kit as a model in terms of size, cut a new platform for the Plague Monk crew from plasticard or any other fairly thin board/ card. You will then need to glue the monks to their new platform. Using a craftknife, score the surface of the platform so that when painted it will feel more like wood than smooth plastic. (The image below isn't ideal, but should give you an idea of this!)
You're done! Now you can exchange the Screaming Bell and Plague censer depending on your battle needs! The images below should help you see how the final pieces all go together. A few words of caution - treat these conversions with care and be careful when substituting the different parts. (The chains in particular are fragile).
Hope this is useful - go forth and be victorious!

How to Paint Skaven Rat Ogres (Island of Blood).
*Squeek*
In advance of my first ever WFB battle (you can see more on that here) I realized that I really didn't have any "Hammer" units to supplement my units of Clanrats. Looking at my line up, I had 2 Rat Ogres painted but that was it.
Taking a look on my shelf, I realized that I had 4 Island of Blood ROgres undercoated. Thinking that they would be the fastest way to add some more power I set about getting them done in one day. I managed to get them good enough to go on the table (yup, I'm one of those guys who hates to field unpainted models - although I don't mind if my opponent does) so that was cool, but after the battle I realized that my initial dislike of these sculpts had faded and I wanted to spend more time on them...
So I did a few things extra:
EDIT: Following the launch of the latest Citadel Paint range in 2012, please note that the colours listed below are from the previous range. I hope to have time to rewrite in the future, but for the time being, you can use the conversion chart/ list I made here or use the official Citadel Conversion chart here.

- Finally got some Solar Macharius Orange to add a decent rust effect on the weapons.
- Added some detail to the base of one to add a bit of humour (added one of the "Mini Skaven" you find on the sprues).
- Added a club/ banner to one of the ROgres.
- Spend more time than usual on the highlighting.
- Tried to add some Warpstone "Glow" effect for the first time around the chunks of warpstone embedded in the ROgre skin.
x4 Island of Blood Rat Ogres. The two at right with small conversions.
Rust on armour (at left)
Purple wash in the incisions, between the stitches.
Added a banner for a club (left) and a little friend (right)
Rat Ogre with banner/ club.
Club/ banner detail
Rat Ogre with "Leetle Friend"
Detail of tiny Skaven!
Warpstone "Glow" effect - a first try for me!
The little friend - again!
The new, improved squad!
1. Undercoat.
(Note: I usually brush PVA glue onto the base and dip in modelling sand before undercoating.)
- GW Chaos Black.
A bit 'o basecoatin'
- Tallarn Flesh: skin, tail
- Dwarf Bronze: bronze parts on weapons/ machinery.
- Boltgun Metal: weapon parts, armour, blades etc.
- Snakebite Leather: leather straps, leather buckles, rope etc.
- Bleached Bone: bandages, stitches, nails, teeth.
- Scorpion Green: warpstone, pipes from equipment.
- Red Gore: Eyes.
- Blood Red: Eyes (a point on top of the Red Gore.)
- Ice Blue: loincloth.
- Calthan Brown: banner pole.
- Codex Grey: robes on "Little Skaven".
- Vermin Brown (or another brown): fur on "Little Skaven".
- Ogryn Flesh: On skin painted with Tallarn Flesh.
- Devlan Mud: On armour.
- Gryphonne Sepia: bandages.
- Liche Purple: (heavily watered down) in scars, where skin is stitched together.
- Solar Macharius Orange: (heavily watered down) on weapon blades and armour.
- Tallarn Flesh/ Dwarf Flesh 50/50 mix on raised areas of skin. (Edges of ears, raised muscle etc.) Then Tallarn Flesh/ Dwarf Flesh/ Dwarf Flesh 50/ 25 / 25 if you want an even lighter effect
- Chainmail on edges of armour.
- Ice Blue/ Skull White 50/50 mix on raised ares of loincloth.
- Codex Grey/ Skull White 50/50 mix on raised areas of robes (on Little Skaven)
- Scorpion Green/ Skull White 50/ 50 mix on warpstone.
- Snakebite Leather/ Skull White 75/ 25 mix on edges of leather straps, rope etc.
- Codex Grey: A light brushing on the fur to lighten up the black fur.
- Dwarf Bronze/ Shining Gold on edges of Dwarf Bronze mechanical parts.
- Very light application of Scorpion Green/ Skull White 50/50 mix on skin around warpstone chunks that are embedded in the skin. (Better to do this very lightly, and if it isn't enough gently add another application.)
- Overbrush or Drybrush Calthan Brown on the base.
- Overbrush or Drybrush Calthan Brown/ Skull White 75/ 25 mix.
- Drybrush Codex Grey.
- Apply areas of PVA glue.
- Dip in modelling grass/ flock (or sprinkle on.)
- Leave to dry and then shake or blow off.
Not being any good with green-stuff and not having a particularly useful bits box means that I keep my aspirations simple. Usually I simply add a couple of visual points of interest. The goal? Have just a bit of variation in a unit. This is particularly important with the Island of Blood Rat Ogres. Although each sculpt is cool, they do look really "samey" when there are more than two of them together. Unlike the other GW rat ogres there are no options for different hands or heads of whatever, so a little bit of creativity is required.
Conversion 1: "Yes, Yes, take the banner..."
This is a banner taken from a Skaven chieftain model (and replaced on the chieftain with a Doomwheel banner so that the chieftain becomes the army Battle Standard Bearer - take a look under the "Heroes" section of my Clan photos page). I thought it would look cool in the ROgre's hands - perhaps he ripped it off of a (dead? dismembered?) Skaven. It is almost as if it is a toy - but a toy that he loves to use to beat the foe to death!
Conversion 2: "Say hello to my little friend"!
As any Skaven knows, our sprues seem to be blessed with the addition of plenty of Giant Rats and other bits that come in useful, ESPECIALLY for adding some visual interest to our bases. A particularly cool/ amusing extra are the "mini-Skaven". In this case I thought my dim-witted ROgres might need a little bit of extra help finding the enemy...and this little chap pointing the way seemed to be just the ticket! Now, he is standing on a "Rock", which brings me to...
Conversion 3: "Your rocks/ logs are made of...?"
...wine corks.
- Pull the wine cork apart and rough up the edges so there are no natural curves or lines.
- Paint with Codex Grey OR Calthan Brown.
- Drybrush with Fortress Grey OR Calthan Brown/ Skull White 50/50 mix.
- Dab on some PVA Glue.
- Dip in flock/ modelling grass.
- Voila!
Hope you like them. Don't hesitate to give me feedback or comments. I'm sure there are plenty of things that I could do better.
Thanks for looking!

The Verminous Horde Invades...
"Squeek"
Sooo, Warhammer Online. I haven't played for a while and now it really shows, as I didn't even know until today that there had been a new patch in October of November last year and that the Skaven are now integrated into Realm V. Realm warfare.
Patch 1.4.0 added "The Verminous Horde" free content for all subscribers that includes the following 4 "Playable" Skaven Classes
Warlock Engineer, Rat Ogre, Pack Master, Gutter Runner
The new content also included a new dungeon, "Thanquol's Incursion, that promised new loot etc. You can find details of what the update included here.
You can also find a full list of the capabilities of each class here. Although I haven't played any of this content or these guys, I enjoyed reading through this as the abilities lined up somewhat with the content you would expect from the different Skaven classes:
- Warlock Engineer: Doom Rocket (which as well as knocking down the enemy, knocks the WE off his feet too!), Warp-Energy condenser, Death Globe, Warp-fire thrower, etc.
- Gutter Runner: Spy, Gutter Run stealth mode, Sabotage enemy war-machines etc.
- Rat Ogre: Frenzy, Savage Assault, Charge, Roar, Bash etc.
- Pack Master: Supports the Rat Ogre and Increases his effectiveness. "Thwap! Thwap!! Thwap!!!" attack, "Overconfidence", "Scurry Away" (for "when the going gets tough") and "Rats of War" (rats burst from the ground and attack the enemy. Each injury becomes a "Festering Wound")
As you can see, these would seem to try to capture the spirit of the Skaven very nicely, and include some of the dark humour that Skaven players should appreciate. To get a sense of the actual characters in motion, check out the player-made video below:
Now, it is important to note that the Skaven are not a "Playable Race" in the traditional sense of the word. What I mean is that don't you enter the game, choose to be a Skaven and then and level up from 1 all the way through to the highest levels in the game, adding equipment and abilities as you go (the basic gameplay mechanic of most MMORPGs). Instead, I understand that the expanded content for the Skaven is available at the highest level, and in RVR only (realm v. realm).
...what a shame!
Despite some of the really cool ideas that sound like fun (see the vid below where the Rat Ogre's "Hurl" skill is put to - endless - good use) the introduction of the Skaven seems to have satisfied no-one:
From what I hear...
- They aren't a fully playable race.
- They are accessible as mercenaries to both sides, which includes the "Order" faction. (WHAT!!??)
- People playing Skaven routinely get owned by other players as you don't keep your own skills when you become a Skaven player. (Which seems logical to me but...)
Have you played the expansion? Taken charge of the Skaven? Played as one of the classes above? If so let me know in the comments below - I'd like to know more about how the experience was!
In the meantime, here are some pics of some characters you might find familiar, brought to (digital) life in Warhammer Online - The Verminous Horde. (Regardless of how the game plays, I think these look great!)
