Finished High Elf Noble on Elven Steed

Finished off the base for this model today, so feel that this Elven Noble on steed is ready for the gaming table.

I'm quite pleased with the results. 
In these photos it isn't easy to see, but I put quite a bit of effort in that I think paid off:

• For the white robes, I layered up from gray, rather than using a wash.
• I picked out each scale on the scale-mail individually. After a base of Dwarf Bronze and then a wash, I added a small highlight of Auric Gold to the bottom of each scale. 
• For the base, I am pleased with how the flock looks around the broken statuary.
• After multiple failed attempts, I finally manage to get the eyes right on a model!
• To match some of my other models, I added a tuft of grass to the base.

Thanks for looking. Come the weekend and bit more time (and some better lighting) I will take some more photos and close ups.

Just a quick update on what has been on my workbench (ahem, "Kitchen Table") this month.

High Elf Ellyrion Reavers. (50% done)

I've been continuing to beef up my High Elves, and thought a good project would be to knock out x10 Ellyrion Reavers. I thought they would be quick - what a mistake! For some reason these are taking ages! They are just very, very detailed, and quite challenging to paint once assembled (I received them this way).

I've got most of the basecoats down, so should be able to start on washes and highlights this week.

As I have 8 Silver Helms painted up, I thought I should tackle this guy as he will add a fair amount of hitting power, and bring the unit up to nine (apparently taking them in a 3 x 3 formation works quite well.) Not sure if I will add a banner to him yet.

Black Templar Space Marines page update.

Noting that I hadn't updated the page for a while, I added pictures of the Stormtalon (I'd had the vehicle painted for a while, but stalled on the base until last week) and also two Whirlwinds I painted up a while ago. I think the page is up to date now.

Hopefully I'll have the High Elves done this week.

Finished High Elf Noble

The ranks of the Purple Sons slowly continue to grow, this time with the addition of a Noble. 

Along with the recent addition of Prince Althran, that significantly ups the potential leadership in the army if I ever play at larger points games (I imagine at 1,500 points I probably wouldn't have more than one noble, which would be my existing battle standard bearer.)

I followed the usual approach of undercoat, basecoats, washes, layers and highlights. Like the Althran model, I had a go at the eyes (NOT my favorite part of painting, but practice makes perfect - or at least should make perfect...I've got a long way to go until I feel comfortable doing eyes).

Finally I added some scratches to the shield, although these didn't come out as well as I'd hoped (unlike the gem on his belt, which felt like a "small" victory.)

High Elf Battle Standard Bearer - done!

An army battle standard needs to be big. Really big.

Hey everyone, been working on adding a High Elf Battle Standard Bearer to The Purple Sons. I think he is ready to join up so here are a couple of pictures. (Not good ones. These were taken at night and then I messed around with them in Picasa.)

It took a few nights to finish this BSB. As you can imagine, there were two things that took a long time.

1. Skull White layers.

I have nearly finished my pot of Skull White, so it looks as though I will be coming into the new Ceramite White soon (if my wife is reading this, it is Father's Day in Japan this coming weekend hint, hint). Sadly, that won't be in time to help reduce the time it took to do these layers of white (don't ask me how many I did. I lost count midway through the process!)

2. Banner details and highlights.

Having collected mainly Skaven I have never had a BSB where the army heraldry was moulded into the standard before. 

On the one hand, it is a really nice design (credit to the scuptor - sorry I don't know their name), on the other, it is pretty complicated to paint AND it is different from the rest of my army.

Now of course, with a bit of work I could replace this banner with a generic one without a design, so I am just being lazy.

It is a shame the colours in the photos suck, because the eagle at the top of the banner actually turned out much brighter than this. I used a Calthan Brown/ Shining Gold mix as the base and a Devlan Mud wash, followed by pure Shining Gold highlights.

A Noble with Battle Standard - that's another 110 points added to The Purple Sons right there!
